6 Summer care tips for your favourite jewellery pieces

Summer is here and chances are you are planning to go on a lovely holiday; or, maybe, you’ll stay at home and enjoy a restful vacation from there. Whichever of the two you opt for, we hope you’ll be wearing your favourite pieces of jewellery during this season. We previously wrote a blog post with tips on how to take care of your jewellery, but it so happens that during the Summer, your beloved pieces may need a bit of special care. So today, we’ll share some extra guidelines that will help you to tend lovingly to your favourite jewels during the Summertime.

Avoid contact of your jewellery with sunscreen & SPF

When the sun is out and bright, it’s a good idea to wear (extra) sunscreen or SPF. However, the chemicals in sunscreen can cause tarnishing, discoloration, or even corrosion of the precious metals your jewellery is made of. Therefore, it’s important to avoid your jewellery coming into contact with it. Our suggestion is to take off your jewellery when applying your SPF or sunscreen, and put your jewels back on once your skin has fully absorbed the liquid. Or, simply apply your sun-protection first thing in the morning and put your jewellery on afterwards.

Don’t wear your jewellery when swimming

As temperatures rise, we love a nice swim to cool off: however, whether you take a dive in the pool or in the ocean, the water may damage your jewellery pieces. The chlorine in pool water is known to damage precious metals, and the salt in sea water can corrode, weaken or tarnish the metals in your jewellery. Furthermore, unfortunately it’s easy to lose your jewellery when swimming. So, we recommend to take your jewellery off before you take a dip.

Keep your jewellery safe during your travels

If you’re going on a holiday, surely you’ll want to bring your dearest jewellery pieces. But as you’re travelling, your jewellery pieces may get tangled or scratched if you do not pack them carefully. Therefore, we advise to pack your jewellery pieces in separate containers, cloths or bags, or to use a jewellery organizer. For more tips, be sure to check out our complete jewellery packing guide.

Take off your jewellery when exercising

To prevent damage to your jewellery, it’s best to take off your jewellery pieces when you’re doing a work-out or going on a hike when it’s hot outside, as a heavy sweat can dull the colour of your jewellery. So, taking your jewellery off before exercising is your safest bet to keep its shine as brilliant as possible!

Clean your jewellery regularly

However hard you try, it may be difficult to completely avoid exposure of your jewellery to chemicals, water and sweat during the Summer. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to clean your jewellery a bit more often than usual, using a designated jewellery polishing cloth.

Prevent exposure of your jewellery to direct sunlight

Although we love the sun and her warmth, direct sunlight can cause discoloration of your jewellery over time. We understand it may be impossible to keep your jewellery out of the sun at all times, but you may want to save your most beautiful and cherished pieces for Summer evenings and after-sunset drinks or dinners to make sure their colour remains flawless.

We hope these tips will help you to keep your jewellery looking as radiant as possible during this season. If you have any questions, always feel free to reach out to us. We’re always willing to help you take the best possible care of your favourite jewels. And of course, if you are going on a holiday: enjoy, be present and make it one to remember!
