Gold or silver jewellery: what color suits you the most?

Are you having a hard time deciding what color jewellery looks best on you? Many of us are
mesmerized by both gold and silver jewellery, yet it can be difficult to determine which of
both metals suits you best. Of course, it’s up to you what color jewellery you feel the most
sparkling in – there’s no rulebook for this, it’s all about what makes you feel confident and
beautiful! Still, if you’re in doubt which color to opt for, this little guide will help you to find
out what color looks great on you based on the undertone of your skin.

Matching your jewellery to your skin tone

A common approach to determining whether you look better in gold or silver, is matching
your choice of jewellery to your skin tone. While at first sight it may seem like your skin has
just one single color, if you look closely, you’ll see that the skin actually consists of a mosaic
of different hues. The undertone of your skin is actually the color coming from underneath
the surface of your skin, affecting your overall tint. Your undertone can either be warm, cool
or neutral. Warm undertones tend to pair well with gold jewellery, cool undertones tend to
match best with silver, while the lucky ones with a neutral undertone can pull off wearing
both metals.

Color science: how does it work?

For skin with a warm undertone, yellow is the dominant hue. This matches well with gold
jewellery, as gold also has a yellow hue to it. Skin with a cool undertone, however, mostly has
blue hues, pairing smoothly with silver’s blueish color. Matching a warm undertone to silver
jewellery, or a cool undertone to gold jewellery, will inevitably result in an unhealthy,
green-looking shade due to the clash of yellow and blue. However, those with neutral skin
tones have red as their dominant color, which pairs well with both the yellow of golden
jewellery and the blue of silver jewellery. How fortunate!

How do I determine my undertone?

Now that you know how the color of your jewellery may work with or against your skin
undertone, it’s time to discover what your undertone is. There are several methods to do
this. For lighter skin, the quickest way to determine your skin tone is by looking at the veins
in your wrist: if your veins are green, you most likely have a warm undertone. If your veins
are blue or purple, your undertone is cool. People with a neutral undertone tend to have a
mix of blue, purple and green veins. If you have darker skin, it might be more difficult to
determine the color of your veins. In that case, it may be easier to compare how different
colors look on you. Trying on different colors of clothing, what do you feel you look best in?
What really brings out your features? If blues and cool reds go well with your skin, you
probably have a cool undertone. If your skin looks best in warm colors like orange or earthy
tones, your skin tone is warm.
